The Pannier Market Hall in Great Torrington has recently undergone a significant refurbishment programme to ensure it remains a vibrant hub for residents and visitors alike. As part of the transformation, a set of new doors has been installed, adding a fresh and inviting touch to the entrance. The renovation work began in early March and finished just in time for the Market Hall to form part of Great Torrington’s VE Day celebrations.
The primary objective of the project was to enhance the existing Market Hall area, which is active and operational on Fridays and Saturdays. The Council’s aim was to create a more inviting and welcoming atmosphere for visitors, ensuring a pleasant experience as they explore the market. This involved visual and functional upgrades designed to make the space more appealing and accessible to all. The ceilings, walls, roof supports, pillars, and gates were painted. The roof supports and pillars were painted light grey, while the gates were black.
To create a usable space in the centre of the Market Hall for food concessions, historically located only outside, the project involved several improvements. These included installing appropriate lighting, power, and ventilation for food and market stallholders, as well as their customers.
Additionally, utilising the existing bin storage area, the contractors constructed a high-security external storage shed for the market’s tables and chairs.
