“Bideford Legends” – 2.

The Strand Cinema.

The Strand Cinema was opened by Maurice Prince, Jewish entrepreneur, in 1938. During the war Maurice was a civil defence warden and he also helped Jewish refugees who were escaping from Nazi persecution by sheltering them in the dressing rooms of the premises.

Here is the Cinema as it was –

And how it is now, as “Strand Court” –

Grenville Nursing Home.

Grenville Nursing Home wasn’t as lucky as Torridge Hospital, next door, which survived as flats, perhaps because it did not have protected status.

Here it is in 2009, before demolition –

All that remains are a couple of walls –

On the site there is now a small playground and housing development –

Information sought on a wartime evacuee to Bideford.

My father’s name was Anthony Arthur Newman. He was born in 1939, then evacuated from Bristol, I believe in 1942, along with his two brothers – my father was 3, elder brother 4, and younger brother 2 years old.

I have sought out organisations that supported my father with the after affects of life and evacuation and ongoing health problems. I know that he had spoken extensively to at least one of the counsellors in regards to his childhood and evacuation, but after that time, never spoke about it again.

I understand that he was evacuated to Bideford, but I’m afraid I don’t know which part of Bideford he went to. My mother recalls that that is where he was evacuated to, but can recall no detail. All I know is, the boys were evacuated and their sister, who was newly born, stayed in Bristol with my grandmother and grandfather. It all sounds very traumatic.

If anyone can recall any information on his time in Bideford, and if they could communicate by leaving a comment or by writing to [email protected] I would be very grateful.

Rachel Hussain.

Shamfest 2024 – 20th & 21st September.

RETURN OF BIDEFORD’S CHARITY BEER FESTIVAL?

REAL ale, cider and gin will all be on offer when Sham Fest returns to Bideford..

The event, which launched last year, will be back in September, aiming to raise thousands of pounds for struggling families and the local community.

Sham Fest 2024 takes place at the Pollyfield Centre in Bideford’s East-The-Water on Friday 20th and Saturday 21st September.

Organiser Huw Thomas said: “We’re hoping to build on last year with a gin bar to go alongside our selection of real ales and ciders from across the South West”.

The main beneficiary will again be The East-The-Water Community Food Pantry, which provides food and hygiene essentials for those in need, with a particular focus on tackling child food poverty. Other funds will go to the Pollyfield Centre, which is a vital hub for the community and a registered charity.

Brunswick Wharf will be the main sponsor for Sham Fest 24, with other pledges of support coming from local businesses and individuals – plus several of the region’s brewers. This year’s festival ale will be a special brew from East-The-Water’s own Clearwater Brewery.

Last year’s inaugural festival raised just over £1,500 and it’s hoped to at least double that in 2024.

Huw said: “East-The-Water has a great sense of community but there are a shocking number of people who are struggling to put food on the tables for themselves and their families.?

“The Food Pantry is a lifeline for many but it relies on donations for everything it does.”

He added: “The Pollyfield plays a key role in our community. A new team have been running the centre for the past year or so and they’ve made a huge number of improvements, making the centre much more welcoming and attractive for everyone who uses it”.

?Sham Fest is also hoping to enlist more sponsors. For more information, see the Sham Fest page on Facebook or email [email protected]

From bike mechanics to wood turning, the fair will showcase local traders and a range of charities, especially those focusing on the natural environment.

There will also be refreshments, children’s activities, Performance area, South Molton Eco-link groups, and a wonderful exhibition of drawings and letters by children from the Global South.

“Bideford Legends” – 1.

Introducing “Bideford Legends”.

My name is Tanya Harrison, I was born abroad and came to live in Bideford in 2017. By profession I am a Teacher of English to foreign students, not a photographer, not a writer, not an expert or historian. I don’t drive which makes me walk a lot, I am attentive to details and curious about the place. Bideford has its unique historical character which is worth memorising.

The aim of my project “Bideford Legends” (FB Bideford Legends) is to show the beauty of the buildings or images that are not very noticeable and sometimes forgotten, to highlight a different view on ordinary things and to encourage our community to share their priceless memories, knowledge, and experience.

* * * *

Bideford Carnegie (“Old”) Library.

Now they say the old Library will be converted, probably into a gym.

* * * *

Bideford Hospital.

The former Torridge Hospital, which was built as a workhouse. It still looks magnificent but it is said that people didn’t like going there because of its past.

‘Letters from the Global South’ exhibition.

SCHOOL CHILDREN’S LETTERS PUT CLIMATE CRISIS INTO PERSPECTIVE IN

NORTH DEVON EXHIBITION.

A pop-up exhibition called Letters from the Global South is coming to North Devon and Torridge in September to highlight the impact of the climate and nature crisis on vulnerable communities across the world. The exhibition will be available to view in Barnstaple, Bideford, South Molton, and Torrington and is free and open to everyone. Local schools are being encouraged to attend.

Created using letters and pictures by school children from countries like Nigeria, Pakistan, and South Africa, the exhibition seeks to show how the crisis is affecting people in the world’s most vulnerable communities. The exhibition has travelled around the UK visiting London, Edinburgh, Shropshire, and Bristol.

Dr Alessandra Palange, the exhibition’s curator, says: We asked children around the world to tell us how the climate and nature crisis is affecting their everyday lives. Within a few months, we received hundreds of handwritten letters, emails, photos and drawings from communities already experiencing the very real impacts of climate change and environmental destruction. The power of the exhibition comes from letting us hear the voices of people who we would otherwise never know existed. These are ordinary people, just like us, who live in communities that are on the frontlines of climate breakdown.’

Letters from the Global South, created by Zero Hour and Muslims Declare, is designed to raise awareness about the crossparty Climate and Nature Bill that is returning to Parliament this autumn. The CAN Bill aims to ensure the UK does its bit to keep to the 1.5C climate target agreed at Paris in 2015, as well as halting and reversing UK nature loss by 2030. It has the support of 160 MPs from all the main parties and is backed by over 365 local authorities across the UK including Devon County Council, North Devon, East Devon, Mid Devon Councils; and Barnstaple, Bideford, and Great Torrington Town Councils.

The Bill also has the support of national organisations like The Women’s Institute and The Co-operative Bank, as well as celebrities including wildlife expert Chris Packham, chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, and businesswoman Deborah Meaden from TV’s Dragon’s Den. Over 200 leading UK climate and nature scientists support it.

Cathy Slaughter from Bideford, who is looking after the exhibition during its stay in North Devon and Torridge, says: ‘I wanted to bring Letters from the Global South here because it really engages people about this issue. The letters and pictures remind us that the choices we make here in Devon have huge consequences for other people around the world, often those much less privileged than us. As the world gets hotter and hotter, the biggest thing we can do to help is call on our politicians to take meaningful action on the crisis by backing the Climate and Nature Bill in Parliament. We’re encouraging residents to write to their MP after seeing the exhibition and ask them to back the Bill this autumn when it returns to Parliament.’

The exhibition is free to attend at the following venues and dates:

Venues and dates:

17 21 September: The Library, South Molton, normal library opening hours.

22 September: Eco Fair at The Pannier Market, South Molton, 11am–4pm.

24 – 28 September: The Pannier Market Barnstaple, normal opening hours.

30 September – 4 October: Great Torrington School (for school groups only; viewings by appointment with school office).

Burrows Rangers seek volunteers for autumn/ winter.

The Northam Burrows rangers are preparing for a busy Autumn of nature conservation work, and the call has gone out for volunteers to help with the next round of vital tasks. Help from volunteers to look after the Country Park and other Local Nature Reserves is crucial for the protection of the local environment but also offers a great way for people to get outdoors, keep fit and have some fun with like-minded people.

The ranger team has organised a full programme of events for the community to get involved in, with an opportunity to discover more about nature and learn some new skills.

Events include:

Sunday 29 September – Marine Conservation Society Great British Beach Clean (11am-1pm) Westward Ho! Slipway.

Wednesday 2 October – Wildflower verge management – Polyfield, East-the-Water.

Wednesday 16 October – Dune fencing, Northam Burrows.

Sunday 20 October – British Beach Clean (11am-1pm) Westward Ho! Slipway.

‘Postcard Pals’ at Bideford Library.

I would like to draw your readers’ attention to a project we are launching in Torridge called Postcard Pals.

This is a project which encourages people to micro volunteer by designing and writing a postcard to a stranger. I have several groups of volunteers who will be meeting to create the postcards and I now need people in the Torridge community to register as recipients.

The recipient can choose whether to receive a postcard monthly from a different stranger, or they can register to receive a postcard and to write one back. Bideford Library will provide the postcards and resources and organise the delivery and collection of the postcards so everyone’s details will be protected. The aim is to give people who may feel lonely or isolated a way of feeling connected without having to leave their home.

Sarah,

Libraries Unlimited.
