Burton Art Gallery; July/ August.

July – we are half way through the year already, and for the many summer visitors to Bideford, the Gallery is showing the skill of the Painter-Printmaker in galleries I and II. There are so many talented artists using the many media and techniques one can employ, that the catalogue will be useful to teach us more about them as we view. When one understands how many processes a print may go through before the artist is content with the result, one has to admire their patience as well as their skill. Many of the works on show are full of colour, while some of the black and white prints catch the eye with their bold lines, and others are delicate and finely drawn.

While this exhibition is on show, Louise Nichols is holding a Workshop, entitled ‘Embellished Linocuts’, and it takes place on Saturday, 21st July, from 10am to 4pm. The cost is £40, and you need to book a place by phoning 01237 471455. You may well be inspired by the exhibition and wish to have a go at making your own prints. The Kingsley Room on the first floor is perfect for these day courses, with plenty of space and light, work tables and a small kitchen.

Events and Exhibitions to look forward to in August:

The Westward Ho! & Bideford Art Society display the talents of their members, – and ‘associated members’ – from 11th August, through until September 15th. Always an excellent show, with entries from all over the South West, so prestigious is this exhibition, that every aspiring artist is keen to be chosen.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout August, the Gallery is putting on Family Days with events mainly for children. That will be worth following up, and you can find the July to December brochure in the Burton Reception area with all the information you need for the rest of the year.

The Gallery has so much to offer, with its excellent Shop, Craft Gallery, Museum and Cafe du Parc, that one can spend all day taking it all in. Admission is free. Open Mon-Sat: 10-4; Sun: 11-4
